Colored Gemstone Terms to Know
Color Change When a gem changes color under different lighting. For example, Alexandrite will appear purplish in incandescent light and greenish in fluorescent light.
Color Zoning A term used to describe distinct degrees of color areas in a gem.
Two such colored gemstone examples include amethyst and tourmaline. Amethyst commonly displays purple to white areas of color while tourmaline may display pink to green to white to other colors within the same rough of gem.
Dispersion A term used to describe the brilliant rainbow-like flashes of color shown within a gem. Diamonds are best known for their dispersion or fire. Few colored gemstones display dispersion or a rainbow display of color within a gem.
Pleochroism When a gem shows different bodycolors depending on which way the gem is viewed and/or held.
